Cleopas and another disciple, possibly his wife, had given up on all the Jesus stuff and decided to go home. And why not. Jesus was dead, their hopes were dashed to nothing, there was a fear of persecution, and someone was messing with their former master's body.
The Risen Lord meets them along the way home to Emmaus, listens to them, and then teaches then the truth from the Bible. He reveals Himself to them in fellowship, then leaves then to go and tell others the Good News. It is a wonderful picture of salvation for us.
